Light my Candle

"Candles which are lit by God the devil cannot blow out." -C. H. Spurgeon

Think about that! When you find yourself in a dark moment or a dark season, go to God. "Light my candle, Lord!"

I wonder if sometimes, we are too busy to sit down to notice the light of a flickering wick. Maybe, that's one reason God allows us to realize darkness – that we will remember He is the Light.

"Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life." – John 8:12

Isn't that a beautiful thought? We can look to Jesus, follow Him, and have the "light of life!" Light through Jesus is eternal. His light is ever burning.

It was an Egyptian custom that a lamp was left burning all night to give light in the darkness. It was interesting to learn that people would choose to buy oil for a lamp over necessary food if they had limited means. We have a couple rooms in the parsonage that have dark wooden walls and little or no natural lighting. If we do not turn the lights on, it is too dark to see anything. Even in the daytime, our spirits can be affected negatively if we do not light up the room. It is proven fact that humans need light to function efficiently.

Just as we consciously flip a switch to turn on lights in a room, we need to consciously look to Jesus when we realize we are in a dark moment.

I am amazed at the various ways that God will "light my candle" when I go to Him. Usually, it is in a seemingly unordinary way. He uses a kind word someone took less than 10 seconds to speak. He uses His workings in the lives of my children. He uses a kink in my plans. He uses an unexpected gift. He uses a window of opportunity. He uses memories. Often, He uses a song. He uses the beauty of nature. He uses an attentive glance from my husband. He uses laughter shared. he uses a phone text. He uses a note. He uses answered prayer. He uses the Light of His Word.

What are ways that God has enlightened your darkness? Think about it and share. It can only bring praise to Him!

Live in the Light, even when it's dark! ~Jeri Lynn

*Be careful to listen and obey the promptings of the Holy Spirit! Don't miss opportunities! God wants to use you to enlighten the darkness of others.
